Polite Speech

Image
When most people ask "How are you?", "Nice to meet you?", and "Let's get in touch" they probably don't mean it. However, that doesn't mean these phrases are useless. Instead, they convey politeness and respect which are important in order to bring people together and form a community. There are many purposes for asking someone how they are doing or using any other greeting. In a casual setting, doing this can serve as a conversation starter. It shows the other person that you are concerned about them and strengthens the conversation. In a professional setting, a greeting such as "Nice to meet you" conveys shows what type of person you are. It creates a better first impression and makes the other person view you more warmly. Realization

In the summer of 2017, I stared outside of a plane window. The world outside seemed very peaceful. We were above the clouds, and as far as I could see, the blue sky was outstretched. At the beginning of the essay, Didion lists facts about Las Vegas weddings, such as "a bride must swear that she is eighteen or has parental permission". This begins a trend through the piece where the audience sees how absurd weddings are. The fact that she only has to swear she is eighteen, without providing any proof, makes the weddings seem unofficial. By saying "nothing else is required" Didion highlights how little requirements there are. She then tells us about the last day "anyone could improve his draft status merely by getting married". The quote she uses of Mr. James A. Brennan, where he brags about how fast he was able to marry couples, further contributes to the superficiality of the weddings. In this case, it appears that the only reason these couples are getting married is to avoid going to war. In the sec
