Day In Day Out

In class this week we discussed This Is Water by David Wallace. The speech is about changing your perception of the world so you are not at the center of it. My favorite part of the speech is about how a situation can be changed just by thinking about it differently. He is talking about a trip to the supermarket after a challenging day at work. On page 235 he says "I've worked really hard all day and I'm starved and tired and I can't even get home to eat and unwind because of all these stupid g-d- people." In this quote he is looking at the store with his perspective. He isn't thinking about other people, just himself. On the next page he thinks a new way. He considers that maybe the people in the line have harder lives than him and are more tired than him. By thinking this way it allows us to not be so unhappy at our situation. After reading the speech I tried to apply this way of thinking to my own life. I used to think that waking up in the morning was an annoyance but now I try to be excited to wake up because it is the start of my day. By changing the way I saw waking up, I was able to wake up easier. Doing homework used to be a chore but now I see it as a way to study for quizzes and tests. I try to apply this perspective to many things I do now. I believe that by making an effort to look at things differently, I am able to enjoy them more.

  1. I completely agree, I always seem to get in a very negative mindset where I feel as though I cannot finish something because of all of the other things I have going on at the same time, and I get extremely overwhelmed easily. I feel if I change my attitude into something positive, I can focus on getting my work done and not just on all of the work I must do. Many things are out of my control in my life, but I might as well control the things that I am able to, like my attitude and thoughts in a way that will help me.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your perspective of Wallace's speech. I think you did an excellent job on branching out on to what extent you can live by his philosophies such as simply waking up and doing homework. Your blog has relay got me thinking about other ways to better my perspective of everyday life.

  3. This is a great way to think Sohil. I like how you took the reading and actually applied it to your own life rather than just analyzing it. The way you took the passages words to heart is great. Your new way of thinking has inspired me to do the same. Nice work Sohil!
