Institutionalized Racism

Image
Housing discrimination is one of the most common forms of institutionalized racism. This got me thinking what negative effects this has and how this furthers the gap between white people and black people. By discriminating against African Americans, neighborhoods become segregated. This leads to African Americans living in poorer quality houses compared to their white counterparts. The segregation also contributes to differences in education. Black students have to go to worse schools than white students. The white students have more teachers, a better building, and more technology available for use. Because of this, white students have more opportunity to get ahead and therefore get accepted into more prestigious universities. This allows them to get higher paying jobs which then allows them to live in the nicer neighborhoods with the better schools. This unfair cycle continues and makes it very difficult for black people to get to a higher wealth class. Housing discrimination a

Perspectives

When I read  The Great Gatsby, by Scott Fitzgerald, I was just focusing on understanding it and looking at it for symbols. Reading the feminist perspective made me rethink every detail in the book. Fitzgerald "was subject to the ideological conflicts that characterized his age". All of the female characters in the novel were portrayed in a negative light. Even though Fitzgerald was married to a modern woman, only the negative side of a modern woman was shown. All of the minor characters look alike and seem to be "shallow, exhibitionist, revolting, and deceitful". The three major characters, Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and Jordan Baker, all have their own flaws, including their aggressiveness. In the last part of the analysis, the author connected the story back to her personal life. She shows that there is still a long way to go for equality. One example she gave is that she got fired just because she didn't go on a date with her married boss.

The Great Gatsby

One of the main themes in The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is the division of old money and new money. This is seen through the East Egg where old money is seen, and West Egg where new money is. One of the quotes we discussed was "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired". (Fitzgerald 79). At our table we thought that the pursued could be the East Egg (old money) because the West Egg (new money) is trying to catch up to them. This would make the West Egg the pursuing. We also thought that the West Egg could be the busy. Since they are trying to pursue the East Egg, they are always working hard to get more money. The East Egg could be lazy because they already have the money so they don't have to work at all.  The mystery surrounding Gatsby disappears as we get to know him as a character. There are many rumors surrounding him, such as "he killed a man" and "he was a German spy". (Fitzgerald 44). However, once we meet

America is unfair. Black people face injustices everywhere. There are not any white people who live where we live because they live in nicer, wealthier areas. If a black person gets killed there is no justice. It is important to provide the justice by balancing the scales. That's why I joined the Seven Days. It is about my love for black people, not a hatred of white people. While they act out of hate, I act out of love. This separates me from them. The Seven Days are not the aggressors; rather, we just react to acts of violence against us. Many other black people blame the victims. They say that the victims should know better. That the victims should know how to act around white people. That the victims are at fault for being killed by white people. They simply internalize the racism that white people aim at us. When Pilate came down to the police station, she acted in a way that confirms the white police officer's stereotypes of black women. Milkman has all the privilege in t
