Screens

 I sit at my desk

Typing on a medium screen

Feeling a little tired

I have to sip some caffeine


Once I finish working

On my medium screen

I can start to relax

And change the scene


I switch my attention

To a smaller screen

Scrolling through stories

About the COVID vaccine


I should get some fresh air, I think to myself

I glance outside, the sunset red as a rose

But Netflix calls to me on a large screen

Fresh air isn't that important I suppose


It's time to go to bed

I finally shut of my screen

Resolving to decrease my screen time

But I can't escape my routine.

Animal Farm and Communism

       In Animal Farm, by George Orwell, the animals are inspired by an old boar to overthrow the humans and run the farm they live on by themselves. However, a majority of them quickly find themselves under the rule of the pigs and they end up right where they begin. The premise of Animal Farm is derived from the Russian Revolution which resulted in a government that left the people worse off then they were before. Many of the characters in Animal Farm are based off of real people. For example, Snowball represents Trotsky, Napoleon represents Stalin, Boxer represents the hardworking citizens, and so on. Many of the events in Animal Farm  also depict real life situations, such as Snowball being chased off the farm representing Trotsky being exiled from the U.S.S.R. I believe that George Orwell mimics the happenings of the Russian Revolution to make his warning about communism more clear. Institutionalized Racism

Housing discrimination is one of the most common forms of institutionalized racism. This got me thinking what negative effects this has and how this furthers the gap between white people and black people. By discriminating against African Americans, neighborhoods become segregated. This leads to African Americans living in poorer quality houses compared to their white counterparts. The segregation also contributes to differences in education. Black students have to go to worse schools than white students. The white students have more teachers, a better building, and more technology available for use. Because of this, white students have more opportunity to get ahead and therefore get accepted into more prestigious universities. This allows them to get higher paying jobs which then allows them to live in the nicer neighborhoods with the better schools. Raisin in the Sun

In A Raisin in the Sun,  by Lorraine Hansberry, we see how all different types of racism come together to affect a family's life. Institutionalized racism is seen through the Clybourne Park Improvement Association, as well as through the prices of both homes in white areas and homes in black areas. The Clybourne Park Improvement Association has New Neighbor Orientation Committee which sends Lindner to talk to the Younger family. Lindner then proceeds to offer the Younger family more money than what they paid to buy the house back. This is an example of institutionalized racism because the New Neighbor Orientation Committee is trying to get the Younger family to stay in their own neighborhood. The reason that the family is moving to Clybourne in the first place is another form of institutionalized racism.
